Conversation with Pilate

This week (13 April ) our sermon was from John 18:33 – 19:12. The conversation with Pilate is pivotal in John. More than any other Gospel, John takes us behind the scenes. It’s here God confronts us with three essential questions—

1-Where do you stand regarding truth?

-in a post truth age where people are encouraged to find their own truth, Jesus declares he alone is the way and the truth

2-Where do you stand with Jesus?

-are you seeking middle ground like Pilate, or are you all in?

3-Who is your authority?

-in an age that wants to assert its own authority (expressive individualism), Jesus declares no one has authority except for that which God gives. It’s not how one comes to power—but how power comes to us

  • 1-do you embrace the answers Jesus gives to the above questions?
  • 2-who does Pilate remind you of in the age we are living in?
  • 3-what are the lies expressed in culture that contradict what Jesus is saying?
  • 4-how might the church restore the throne and dominion of God in a world that honors itself?
