There is a pattern throughout Scripture that often challenges our instincts: God frequently calls His people to move in faith before they see the breakthrough. We naturally want certainty before obedience. We want provision before generosity, safety before surrender, and visible answers before taking the next step. Yet the Bible repeatedly shows that faith is not merely believing internally — it is trusting God enough to act.
When Israel stood before the flooded Jordan River, God instructed the priests carrying the ark to walk toward the water. The river did not part while they waited safely on shore. Scripture says, “As soon as the priests who carried the ark reached the Jordan and their feet touched the water’s edge, the water from upstream stopped flowing.” (Joshua 3:15–16). The miracle followed the movement.
When Jesus fed the five thousand, the disciples first had to release the little they had. Five loaves and two fish were clearly insufficient for the crowd. Yet Jesus blessed the bread before there was abundance. The miracle was discovered in the distribution.
Peter could not experience walking on water from the safety of the boat. At Jesus’ invitation Peter had to step onto the sea. Faith required leaving what felt secure.
Abraham obeyed God’s difficult command to offer Isaac. He climbed the mountain carrying wood for the sacrifice before the ram appeared in the thicket. Provision came in the place of obedience.
The widow poured out her last oil before God filled her jar. The walls of Jericho fell after the marching. The blind man was healed on the way. Jesus told ten lepers to go show themselves to the priests. Scripture says, “as they went, they were cleansed” (Luke 17:14).
Sometimes God asks us to: forgive before feelings change, give before finances make sense, serve before we feel qualified, pray before circumstances improve, or step forward before the path is fully clear. Faith often means putting our feet in the water while the river is still flowing. Throughout Scripture, the people who experienced God’s power were rarely those who waited for complete certainty. They were those willing to obey God one step at a time. The Jordan still parts. Bread still multiplies. Water is still walkable when Jesus calls. And God still provides rams on mountains of obedience.
“Trinity International Church is a safe, welcoming, community of Christ-followers who uphold a high view of Scripture, celebrate unity in diversity and participate fully in the abiding Christian life as described in the Bible. We are united by the principle that in the essentials there should be unity, in all else there should be charity.”
