Sermon December 14th
“This week our Sermon was from Isaiah 9:2-7
The Prophet Isaiah declared hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus that He would be the “Prince of Peace.” The Biblical word for “Peace” used here is a rich word with layers of meaning. In the Hebrew it is, “Shalom.” This is much more than ceasing of violence. It carries the idea of perfect harmony… everything as it should be… according to God. Colossians 1:20 says, “And through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.” How does Jesus bring Peace to earth? Through a ministry of reconciliation. What does it mean to “reconcile?” The Greek word “apokatalasso” means “to bring back to a former state of harmony.” When every created thing is in perfect alignment with its Creator, this is Shalom. Colossians 3:15 says, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Jesus removed the barrier and made a way for Shalom. Now there is a body of People, the Church, the Ekklesia, the Called Out Ones, who are able to re-align with truth. This is the Kingdom of God, alive and well on earth. But… this is NOT something that is AUTOMATIC. YOU MUST INDIVIDUALLY “LET THE PEACE OF CHRIST RULE IN YOUR HEART.” It is a daily choice.
Discussion Questions
1. What is the world’s answer for war and anger, hatred and discord? How well has this worked?
2. Why don’t people want to do things God’s way? What is it about aligning with Him that is so difficult? What can you do to be better aligned with God and produce Shalom?
