Sermon December 28th
“This week our Sermon was from Numbers 6:22-26.
The Bible is filled with stories of God’s blessing and favor. I’ve always been fascinated by this. Things do not go equally well for everyone. One of my favorite stories from the Bible tells of twin boys born into the seed line of Promise. Abraham’s son, Isaac with his wife, Rebecca, had twins Esau and Jacob. Esau came out first. He was a man’s man, a hunter and covered in red hair. His younger twin was Jacob. He was a momma’s boy who liked to cook and stayed close to home. Jacob’s name means deceiver and he lived up to his name by cooperating with his mother to deceive his father and steal his brother’s birthright. I never really liked Jacob. Despite his shortcomings God blessed him. Genesis 30 and 31 tell of how God increased his wealth through supernatural favor. When we reflect on the phrase, “The Lord show you His favor,” it implies that God is looking favorably upon us. His gaze is a symbol of approval and delight. Luke 4:17-21 says, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written: 18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free,19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” This past year God has shown His favor on Trinity Church. Throughout Scripture, when the “favor of God” is given it results in things going better than they ever should. 2025 was a year of the Lord’s Favor at Trinity Church. In the place of brokenness, uncertainty and loss God brought wholeness, laughter and increase. If God is for us, who can be against us?
Discussion Questions
1. How did you experience God’s hand of blessing at Trinity Church this past year?
2. Why do you think God chose Jacob over Esau? Why do you think God chose to show His favor on Trinity Church?
