Sermon 21st Sept – Genesis 1:26-28 & Mark 12:13-17
Our Need for Scripture At Times Like This
To understand what it means to be created in God’s image and its application and implication, we should pattern ourselves after Jesus, who is the complete revelation of the image of God (Heb. 4:15)
The character and actions of Jesus will serve as a helpful guide to understanding the purpose God created us in his image.
In John 14:6
Jesus said“I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me”. The ‘way’ speaks of a connection between two persons or things—here Jesus is the link between God and sinners.
When Jesus talked about his life, ministry, work, teaching, he was calling people to follow him and practice his way of life. He said come and learn from me for I am meek and humble at heart, and look to how I relate to people and what I have done. Jesus was pointing to his character—to God’s image since he is the complete revelation of the image of God. As if Jesus was saying, look to the nature of my ministry and immediate it. Jesus’ ministry and life depict the nature of the divine image in humans.
Jesus said, “Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s because the coin bears his image, and to God what is God’s.” What are the things that are God’s? (Mark 12:13-17). Whatever that bears the image of God!
We give ourselves to God in services to others, because we bear God’s image. We do that through commitment, devotion, love, loyalty, the outworking of the Sermon on the Mount, and going to practice the fruit of the spirit to demonstrate the believer’s faith.
All of these are proper responses for those who bear the image of God. Such character of Jesus must be the motivational force to encourage Christians to put their Christian boots on the ground—to be the “salt, light and show what God is like in our lives.
