“BIG things happen in SMALL groups.” Those words became familiar to me at First Baptist Church of Sacramento in the Fall of 2003. As the Adult Minister I was tasked with starting Small Groups at a church where small groups had completely disappeared. Many of the regular church attenders did not know each other’s first names. People were isolated. Fellowship was hard to find. It may come as no surprise that this was on the heels of a difficult church split. When churches go through difficult times one of the things that often suffers is community and community is often built in small group gatherings. How do you rebuild small groups? It starts with people willing to open up their home and lead. I found that there were some fantastic men and women who were willing to do just that, so we launched a new season of connectedness through small groups at First Baptist that year. It was a big success.
Why are small groups so important? Because we were created to thrive in community but we wither when we are isolated. We gain wisdom, encouragement, joy, protection and supernatural favor when we gather. Human thriving happens best in connection. People need to know where they belong, who their people are and who they can trust. We have been hard-wired to give and to serve others. It feels good to be useful. Whether we are sharing biblical truth, a tasty meal, stories about our life or a common task, we find our community when we are together with people we know, doing life together. Who knows you? How connected are you with others at Trinity Church? In 2026 I challenge you to join a small group. Why? Because BIG things happen in SMALL groups. New groups are forming, existing groups are ready to welcome you. There is a place for you at Trinity where you can be known. If you are willing to help lead a new small group please reach out to Pastor Dan so we can add you to the growing list.
