Sermon March 8th
“This week our Sermon was from 1 Corinthians 10:14-33
If you eat unhealthy food you will be an unhealthy person. YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT. YOU ARE ALSO WHAT YOU WORSHIP. Jesus sat at the table of a tax collector for the sake of the gospel. Peter sat at the table of the Jewish circumcizers for the sake of self.
Wrong Thinking: Where you sit matters. Right Thinking: Where your heart is matters.
Paul teaches: Food is food. Metal, wood and stone idols are just objects. There is no salvation by proximity. Salvation is by relationship. What matters is where your heart is at. Old Testament Israel thought they could worship God and worship idols. They fashioned a Golden calf while Moses was on the mountain. God is very clear in Scripture… this is like being married and still having other sexual partners. This provokes God’s jealousy and rightly so.What is communion? A participation in the covenant relationship between God and His People. COMMUNION IS WILLINGLY GIVING YOUR HEART. The Greek word for “Communion” is “koinonia.” It means, “fitly joined together.” When you take communion you are willingly joining your heart to God and to His People in covenant relationship. According to this passage you can also “commune” with demons! Paul says to flee idolatry. An idol is anything we put in God’s rightful place. This problem is that when we give an idol what belongs to God we are participating in communion with the demonic, fallen angels. 1 Corinthians 10:20-21 says, “I do not want you to be participants with demons. 21 You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons too; you cannot have a part in both the Lord’s table and the table of demons.”
Discussion Questions
1. How does food and drink become part of you? How long is what you ate different than what you are? How does this align with John 6:56, “whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me and I in him.”
2. What might it look like today to take part in “the table of demons?” Can you do this unknowingly? What should you do once you are aware? Is it possible to only worship God and not demons or are we all destined to fall into demon worship as sinners?
